Internet Explorer Compatibility
According to a report on Silicon.Com, Microsoft has been cautioning website owners that its forthcoming release 8 of Internet Explorer (IE8) may cause problems with the display of their websites.
This is due to the fact that IE8 will be much more compliant with international standards than previous versions. Therefore site owners who have designed their sites to display correctly in prior versions of IE that were less compliant with the standards, may find that their sites no longer display as expected in IE8.
This cannot really be considered to be a problem with the new version of IE since greater standards compliance from Microsoft is to be applauded. In the future this should lead to fewer differences in how websites display with any of the major competing browsers. However, it does potentially pose a problem in the short term concerning how to get some websites to display correctly in earlier versions of IE as well as the new version 8.
However, Microsoft has introduced a new compatibility tag to try to help- "IE+EmulateIE7". There are also three standards modes available:
- super-standards mode will be the default with IE8.
- quirks mode will be compatible with current IE pages and applications,
- standards mode will be the same as what's offered by IE7 and "compatible with current content"
In an IE8 Blog posting on 10 June, members of the IE team reminded site owners that they need to "get ready" for IE8 so that their content will "continue to display seamlessly".
