Certification Focus - Cisco
Although there are many suppliers of data networking equipment, Cisco is the market leader in this area and therefore its accreditations for network engineers and technicians are the most sought after.
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)This certification validates the ability to install, configure, operate, and troubleshoot medium-size routed and switched networks, including implementation and verification of connections to remote sites in a WAN. |
CCNA certification requires exam passes in either:

| There are no prerequisites, but CCNA certifications are only valid for three years. Re-certification can be achieved by either passing the current CCNA exam or the ICND2 exam or any 642 professional level or Cisco Specialist exam. |
Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)This certification validates the ability of network professionals to install, configure and troubleshoot converged local and wide area networks with 100 to 500 or more nodes. Network Professionals who achieve CCNP have demonstrated the knowledge and skills required to manage the routers and switches that form the network core, as well as edge applications that integrate voice, wireless and security into the network. |

| A current CCNA certification is required as a prerequisite. CCNP certifications are only valid for three years after which re-certification is required by either passing any 642 exam that is part of the professional level curriculum after 1 January 2006, or a current CCIE or CCDE written exam. |
